Voice and speech disorders

Hoarseness ranging from a raspy voice to complete loss of voice, as well as a broken, husky or altered tone, are all signs of voice disorders. If left untreated, changes to the vocal organs may occur, such as vocal cord nodules.

As part of the ENT examination, an endoscopy is performed through the nose, with video recording if necessary. We insert a thin endoscope connected to a video camera through the nose. This allows us to clearly observe the fine vibrations of the vocal cords (actually the vocal folds). These provide information as to whether there is a disorder of the vocal folds. This examination is called ‘stroboscopy’.

In addition, a voice analysis can determine whether voice fatigue occurs during vocal strain. This is an important consideration for all speaking professions.
