Tonsillectomy
Laser tonsillotomy
Partial removal of the palatine tonsils (tonsillotomy) is an outpatient procedure performed under gentle, short-acting general anaesthesia, which we carry out via the mouth. During the procedure, only excess tissue is removed. The function of the tonsils is not impaired by the operation.
We perform this procedure exclusively using a laser or shaver. These instruments allow for millimetre-precise work, ensuring that the tonsil capsule is not damaged and remains intact. Further advantages of these new and alternative techniques include a significantly lower rate of post-operative bleeding, reduced post-operative throat pain and a considerably shorter recovery time.
The operation itself takes about 30 minutes. After the operation, you will be monitored for 2 hours at the clinic, after which you can recover at home. Recovery takes about 2 weeks.
Tonsillectomy
We only remove the palatine tonsils completely in cases of chronic inflammation or tumour involvement. We perform this operation under general anaesthesia via the mouth.
We primarily perform this procedure using a laser, but also employ coblation or high-frequency techniques (e.g. Celon) or shavers. The advantages of these new and alternative techniques include a significantly lower rate of post-operative bleeding, less post-operative throat pain and a considerably shorter recovery time.
The operation itself can take up to 1 hour. Immediately after the operation, you may experience discomfort when swallowing and there is a risk of post-operative bleeding. We therefore recommend a hospital stay of 3 to 7 days. Recovery takes approximately 2 weeks.
