Stirrup surgery

In otosclerosis, a condition affecting the middle ear, the elastic suspension of the stapes – the final link in the chain before the inner ear – undergoes bony remodelling. As a result, the stapes becomes increasingly immobile, and sound transmission to the inner ear is increasingly impeded. Hearing ability progressively deteriorates.

Through surgery, we can replace the fixed stapes with a titanium stapes prosthesis. We perform this procedure microscopically via the ear canal. Hospitalisation is only necessary in cases of severe dizziness. You can usually recover at home, but should rest in bed for 1 to 2 days.

The healing process is complete after around 2 weeks. The chance of restoring hearing is over 90 per cent.
