Laryngeal surgery

Vocal cords, larynx

The larynx is responsible for coordinating breathing, swallowing and voice production. The vocal cords are located in the larynx.

In cases of prolonged hoarseness (lasting more than 3 weeks), a lump-like sensation in the throat and difficulty swallowing, it is important to investigate the cause, as there may be tissue changes present: cysts, polyps, wart-like growths, various vocal cord deposits, vocal cord nodules, and benign or malignant tumours.

Laryngeal cancer is the most common type of cancer in the head and neck region. The main cause is smoking; this condition is very rare in non-smokers. If laryngeal cancer is detected at an early stage, the chances of a complete cure are good. Smokers should undergo regular screening from the age of 35. However, the most effective way to prevent laryngeal cancer is to stop smoking.

If there is a growth on the vocal cords or larynx, it must be surgically removed.

We perform this procedure predominantly endoscopically, i.e. through the mouth using a surgical microscope. We use specialised instruments and, in most cases, a laser. This allows us to operate inside the larynx without having to open it from the outside. However, if a growth is too large, an external incision in the neck is required.

Endoscopic operations do not usually require an inpatient stay. Recovery takes 2 to 3 weeks. For some operations, patients are advised not to speak during the first week following the procedure.
