Infections in the head and neck region

Inflammatory reactions in the upper aerodigestive tract occur as early as the first few years of life. Most of these reactions are immunological defence mechanisms and endocrine regulatory processes necessary for the development of the immune system.

Hyperplasia of the pharyngeal lymphatic ring may develop; this includes, amongst others, the palatine and pharyngeal tonsils. Typical symptoms in children may include slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, obstructed nasal breathing, snoring, Eustachian tube dysfunction, middle ear effusions, hearing loss and delayed speech development. Middle ear infections, tonsillitis or inflammation
of the cervical lymph nodes may occur more frequently.

We examine our young patients in a child-friendly manner, using state-of-the-art equipment (microscope, endoscope, ultrasound).
