Lymph node removal
Lymph nodes are lens- to bean-sized structures of the lymphatic system located along the course of the lymphatic vessels. Various processes within the body can lead to temporary swelling of the cervical lymph nodes. In healthy individuals, swelling of the neck lymph nodes is usually not visible. Visible lymph nodes, which may also be painful and permanently enlarged, must be investigated.
If diagnostic measures such as an ultrasound scan, blood tests or a puncture do not reveal a clear cause, the lymph node should be removed and examined histologically.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia on an inpatient basis. The lymph node is exposed and removed via a small incision. At the end of the operation, a small drain is usually inserted, which must be left in place for approximately 2 days.
